Mesothelioma
- A Brief Account |
 |
|
|
|
The
origin of mesothelioma
is in mesothelium
a type of tissue
lined with special
cells referred to
as mesothelial cells
that typically line
the abdominal cavity(Peritoneum),
heart cavity(Pericardium),
chest cavity(Pleura),
and the outer surface
of most internal
organs. According
to the Department
of Health and Human
Services, the World
Health Organization,
and the Environmental
Protection Agency
asbestos has been
well marked as a
human carcinogen.
Anyone breathing
asbestos fibers
has greater chances
of suffering from
cancer. Research
also proves that
lung cancer in asbestos-exposed
workers is thought
to occur at a slightly
younger age than
other lung cancers,
and the risk is
extraordinarily
higher if the exposed
person is also a
smoker. However
there has been no
correlation drawn
as to why, one person
contracts mesothelioma
and the person next
to them do not when
both of them are
living in the same
set of circumstances
and amounts of exposure
or why the more
heavily exposed
individual never
contracts an asbestos-related
disease but unfortunately
the person looking
after him/her diagnosed
after washing his/her
work clothing. More
or less we are all
exposed to asbestos
in the air and so
these levels of
risk are generally
considered "acceptable".
According to the
National Cancer
Institute, mesothelioma
can either be malignant
(cancerous) or benign
(non-cancerous)
in nature. Malignant
mesothelioma, a
rare form of cancer
disease in which
malignant cells
is found in the
sac lining the chest
(the pleura), the
lining of the abdominal
cavity (the peritoneum)
or the lining around
the heart (the pericardium).
The symptoms experienced
after the attack
of mesothelioma
will differ depending
on the organ affected.
For instance a person
experiences loss
of appetite, pain
in the abdomen and
problems with bowel
functioning if affected
by Peritoneal Mesothelioma
or mesothelioma
of the stomach while
a person experiences
lungs and chest
pain, difficulty
breathing, and coughing
up blood when affected
with Pleural Mesothelioma.
A life is saved
if the disease is
diagnosed early.
Malignant mesothelioma
often leads to death.
Due to its unwonted
nature, mesothelioma
is typically arduous
to analyze and care
for. Traditionally
there are three
kinds of treatment
for patients with
malignant mesothelioma
and they are; Surgery
(taking out the
cancer), radiation
therapy and chemotherapy.
Sometimes the situation
may demand to employ
two or more of these
combined in the
course of treatment.
New approaches are
currently being
tested and promising
drugs like: L-NDDP
or Platar, Endostatin,
Interferon Gamma
and Lovastatin.
Therapy like Photodynamic
therapy, Immuno
therapy and Gene
therapy are employed
to kill the cancer
cells. It is very
important that you
take your own time
and learn more about
the risk factors
that make you susceptible
to mesothelioma
so that you an take
proper steps.

Stop
smoking if you are heavily
exposed to an environment
of asbestos to prevent
the maximum chances of
lung cancer. |
